Benefits of Repair instead of Replace

According to Westminster Council, in the UK we throw away 1.6 million tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) every year which equates to 24 kg of waste per person, one of the highest figures in Europe.

This provides a major problem both environmentally and for the recycling industry and wider society with some appliances containing potentially harmful elements and gases.

The average UK household spends £800 a year on household electrical items which could be drastically reduced by repairing items in the home rather than simply throwing them away when they are broken.

In July 2021, the Government brought in the ‘Right to Repair Regulations’ designed to tackle ‘premature obsolescence’, which deliberately shortens product lifespan, by allowing consumers access to spare parts and technical information which intends to reduce energy usage and electrical waste.

By repairing items, households could save money and reduce their carbon footprints by reducing the amount of WEEE.

If any appliance stops working, first check on the Infoo app if it has been recalled and then find out if it can be repaired. If it is beyond repair, ensure you dispose of the item in a responsible manner, either through your local council or through an appliance recycling scheme.
