My washing machine is not draining.

If your washing machine is not draining, the issue could be a blocked pump or a kink or blockage in the drain hose. Don't panic. Try these fixes and we'll see if you can get it working again.

  • Clean out the drain pump & filter

    • Turn off your appliance and disconnect from the mains.

    • Open the service flap on your machine (usually bottom right of your washing machine)

    • Drain off the water in the machine using the drainage hose provided or by unscrewing the round pump cover (lots of water will come out so be ready with towels and a large flat container to catch the water). The pump cover can be difficult to unscrew (usually unscrews counterclockwise)

    • Clean the pump filter & inside the housing so the impeller can rotate freely.

    • Reinsert the pump filter and screw tight (handle should usually be vertical)

    • Clip the drain hose back in position & make sure you put the stopper in properly!

    • Close the service flap & you're ready to go.

  • Fix a clogged or kinked drain hose

    • If the drain hose from your machine is plumbed in permanently to the drainage of your property, you need to disconnect it.

    • If your drain hose is not plumbed in permanently, check that the drain hose is not pushed too far down into the drainpipe/standpipe (insert no more than 4.5"/113cm or water can siphon back into the machine). Also make sure the drain hose is not tight in the drainpipe as it needs air to enter to work properly.

    • Check the hose for fluff, debris, buttons or coins. These can block anywhere, but particularly around the rubber siphon.

    • Make sure the drain hose is not kinked or looped over itself as this can hinder drainage.

    • Empty out any water still in the hose & if your machine has one, run the 'drain machine' function (you will need a bucket to catch all the water).

    • Reconnect the drain hose and you are ready to go.

  • You may have selected the 'no spin' or 'rinse stop' at the end of the wash cycle

Quite easy to do, but make sure any 'no rinse' or 'rinse stop' function is turned off or else your washing machine will stop before draining the water out.

If you have accidentally selected the 'no spin' or 'rinse stop' setting on the control panel, your washing will sit in the water and not drain & spin at the end of the cycle. Just switch off these settings and you should be good to go.
