How to use electric heaters safely

As the cold winter months roll in and energy prices continue to rise, many might be tempted to use electric heaters to warm up certain rooms to keep the general costs of central heating down and provide extra warmth.

Electric heaters, however, do come with fire risks and there are a few common misconceptions which put people most at risk:

  1. That it’s safe to leave heaters switched on and unattended

  2. That it’s okay to leave them switched on all night

  3. That it’s okay to cover an electric heater with a sheet or blanket to warm it up

  4. That you don’t need to check it for recalls

An electric heater should always be monitored and turned off over night to ensure that it can be switched off quickly should anything go wrong. Heaters should never be placed near anything that can burn and should never be covered with anything. You should also avoid plugging heaters in to overused extension cords.

Always check all your electrical appliances for recalls in case there are any issues which could lead to fires and other hazards. You can do this by downloading the Infoo app.
